If you have an idea for a film, the next step is simple in theory — but often confusing in practice:
How do you actually turn that idea into a story?
This is where a film outline comes in.
In this guide, we’ll walk through a simple, practical way to build your outline step by step.
Start with a clear idea
First of all, you don’t need a full story.
Instead, you just need a starting point:
- a situation
- a character
- or even just a visual moment
For example, it could be as simple as:
A woman returns to a place she tried to forget.
At this stage, clarity matters more than detail.
Break it into key moments
Next, identify the major points of your story.
In most cases, this includes:
- a beginning
- a middle
- and an end
More specifically, you can think in terms of:
- inciting moment
- midpoint
- climax
At this point, you’re not writing scenes yet, you’re building anchors.
Turn moments into scenes
Now, start expanding those key points into smaller moments.
Each one becomes a scene or a beat.
For example:
- She arrives in town
- She sees something familiar
- She avoids someone
- A secret starts to surface
As a result, your story begins to take shape.
Keep it simple
At this stage, many people overcomplicate things.
However, an outline should stay simple.
- one or two lines per scene
- no dialogue
- no formatting
In other words, focus on clarity, not perfection.
Move things around
Once you have a list of scenes, the real work begins.
You start testing the story.
For instance:
- move scenes
- remove weak moments
- add missing links
This is where your outline becomes flexible.
And importantly, this is much easier to do here than in a full script.
Connect the story
At this point, ask yourself:
👉 Does each moment lead to the next?
If something feels disconnected, adjust it.
Meanwhile, look for:
- cause and effect
- emotional progression
- rising tension
As a result, your story becomes coherent.
From Outline to Treatment
Once your outline works, you can expand it.
That’s where the treatment comes in.
Instead of short notes, you now write the story in paragraphs.

FilmPlan is an outline tool
At this stage, having the right tool makes a big difference.
FilmPlan helps you build your outline visually, using cards instead of long documents.
This way, you can:
- organize your scenes
- move them freely
- see your entire story at once
As a result, outlining becomes faster and much more intuitive.
